Increasing the surface area of solid (by reduction of particle size) may cause explosion in some cases. For example  In flour mills, the air can fill with fine flour dust which has very large surface area. A spark can cause the flour to catch fire and explode.  In coal mines where the air is filled with very fine coal dust.
