Group 2

🔬 Chapter 10: Periodicity 🔬

  • Group 2 Elements 🧪:

    • Group 2 elements from magnesium to barium are typical metals with high melting points and good conductors of heat and electricity.

    • As you move down Group 2, the atomic radius increases due to the addition of an extra shell of electrons.

    • Group 2 elements react with water to produce hydrogen gas and metal hydroxide.

    • They burn in air to form white solid oxides, which form hydroxides with water.

    • The reactivity of elements with oxygen or water increases down Group 2 as the first and second ionization energies decrease.

    • The sulfates of Group 2 elements get less soluble in water going down the group.

    • Many compounds of Group 2 elements have important uses, such as limestone (calcium carbonate) in building materials and making cement.
