🔬 Chapter 10: Periodicity 🔬
Group 2 Elements 🧪:
Group 2 elements from magnesium to barium are typical metals with high melting points and good conductors of heat and electricity.
As you move down Group 2, the atomic radius increases due to the addition of an extra shell of electrons.
Group 2 elements react with water to produce hydrogen gas and metal hydroxide.
They burn in air to form white solid oxides, which form hydroxides with water.
The reactivity of elements with oxygen or water increases down Group 2 as the first and second ionization energies decrease.
The sulfates of Group 2 elements get less soluble in water going down the group.
Many compounds of Group 2 elements have important uses, such as limestone (calcium carbonate) in building materials and making cement.
